Virtues

A commissioned series of 10 paintings for a community chapel in Ile‑Ife, Osun State, Southwest Nigeria.

My brief was to create a series of ten paintings for a chapel space designed for daily use by a diverse community, and to link the work with a sustainable community garden. I chose the theme of universal spiritual virtues because I wanted the artwork to connect on an emotional level — inviting viewers to reflect on what each virtue means personally, and what it might offer to the wider community.

Each painting begins with a virtue‑centred verse from the Christian Community Bible, a translation widely used by Catholic congregations across Southwest Nigeria. These verses act as spiritual foundations, not illustrations: they offer an atmosphere, a movement, a way of entering the work.

A double rainbow over my neighbourhood became the structural key for the series providing a natural spectrum that allowed me to connect the virtues visually and conceptually. The paintings weave together four strands:

Scripture and spiritual symbolism
Colours, emotions, landscapes, flora and fauna connected to Southwest Nigeria
Precious metals and stones
The shifting qualities of light

Each artwork is conceived as a contemporary stained‑glass panel, designed, by layering up a variety of different types of acrylic paint, to change character depending on the light source.

Flourish

My Flourish collection is a celebration of positivity, grace, and the quiet resilience that allows beauty to emerge even in the darkness. Each piece draws on the abundance of blooming gardens, the warmth of sun‑lit petals, the drift of familiar summer fragrances, the sense of renewal that arrives with colour.

This series invites a moment of pause. A breath. A reminder that growth continues beneath the surface, and that brightness can return even when days feel dimly lit. Through layered colour and expressive botanical forms, Flourish offers a gentle space for hope, reflection, and uplift.
