About Marie Phillips - MAP Art

I am a South London based contemporary artist and through my paintings I explore the shifting energies of the natural world. My work is influenced by the intense colour created when light passes through coloured glass, especially stained‑glass panels, and by the way colour transforms with changes in light and atmosphere. This fascination underpins my belief that colour is dynamic, alive, and emotionally charged.

Working primarily with acrylic paints and pastels, I capture the subtle moments when light, weather, and nature begin to move: the lift of air before a storm, the trace of a garden scent that stirs a memory, or the rhythm of a landscape transitioning between seasons. My practice centres on translating these fleeting sensations into expressive, layered compositions.

After a career in financial services, I am now able focus on creative work, developing personal projects and undertaking private commissions.

  • I developed my creative practice through training at a range of institutions, studying painting, basic design, stained glass, and other foundational visual disciplines. This varied education shaped my intuitive, materials‑led approach and continues to inform the movement, structure, and atmosphere within my work.
